"Masculinities in Russia III" 23-27 June 2004

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Papers are invited for an interdisciplinary conference, "Masculinities inRussia III," to be held 23-27 June 2004 at the Summer Research Laboratoryon Russia and Eastern Europe, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The conference endeavors to support research by Russian/FSU scholars in the emerging field of Masculinity Studies. Building on previous meetings, organizers hope to continue discussion of key issues in the field while expanding the theoretical, topical, and geographical scope of the meeting. Organizers thus especially invite papers that situate articulations of masculinity in Russia/FSU within a larger historical, theoretical, or geographical framework. Papers from all disciplines are welcome, and those from typically underrepresented fields, such as anthropology, communications, geography, and psychology, are especially encouraged. Papers that examine masculinity in any area of the Former Soviet Union, including its non-Russian republics or cultures, are welcome. Topics for "Masculinities in Russia" include but are not limited to: Masculine Aesthetics, Performance, or Iconography; Historical Forms of Masculinity; Masculine Hierarchies (Hegemonic and/or Subordinate Masculinities); Masculine Identities (Intersections with Race, Class, Sexual, and National Identities); Male Sociability; Male Sexualities; Practices of Becoming Masculine. Masculinities in Russia" will be a working meeting in which participants collectively discuss papers submitted in advance. The meeting will beheld as part of the annual Summer Research Laboratory on Russia and Eastern Europe at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Participants are encouraged to apply to the Summer Research Lab for free university housing, which may be extended beyond the conference dates.
